BarCamp Philly is Tomorrow

If you have an interest in art, design, technology, science, and want to meet others in Philly with those interests, you should definitely check out BarCamp tomorrow! BarCamp is an “unconference” which means any attendee can propose a talk to fit in multiple time slots throughout the day. The day’s schedule is set in the morning, and then attendees are free to drift between the presentations all day. It’s a great place to hear about new ideas for Philly or pick up a new skill. NextFab Studio is an official sponsor, and are offering a special discount on tickets (just use the code nextfab2012 at check out).

Coming up: More Arduino!

We had so much fun at last month’s arduino class, we decided to re-run all three sessions.

Expect a fun crash course on everything you will need to get busy creating with your Arduino. We’ll cover all the key concepts, from learning the fundamental aspects of programming with the Arduino language, to the different types of materials you can use in your projects and prototypes. Our aim for this course is to send you home with a cool project to show your friends, a whole bunch of new ideas and the knowledge and resources to produce some Arduino magic!

General tickets are $90. The ticket covers all three sessions:

Wednesday, November 28, 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Wednesday, December 5, 6:30pm – 8:30pm
Wednesday, December 12, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

All sessions held at Asian Arts Initiative, 1219 Vine Street.

If you are coming to the class with some knowledge of microprocessors, basic circuitry and/or programming, you may attend just one or two sessions for $30 each. Email contact@thehacktory.org for details.

The cost of the class does not include materials. We will have an assortment of sensors, buzzers, motors and more for you to experiment with in class. Depending on what you want to buy and what you already own, expect to spend $0 – $40 on supplies.

Intro to Circuits rescheduled for Nov. 7

We had to reschedule last month’s Intro to Circuits class due to technical difficulties. If you couldn’t make our last date, here’s a second chance!

Wednesday, November 7, 6pm – 9pm
$35 includes goodies to take home
Location: Asian Arts Initiative, 1219 Vine Street

Have you been tantalized by neat projects using LEDs, Arduinos, or EL-wire? Ever wondered what’s going on inside your computer, television, or vacuum cleaner?

Electricity permeates our modern existence, and learning your way around circuits is the first step in demystifying it. In this class, we’ll start with the very basics, teaching you how to identify common circuit components, use tools like multimeters and breadboards, read schematics and datasheets, and describe what’s going on with a few equations. You can choose one of our projects to build, or bring your own project to work on.

Hacking the Gender Gap in DC today

We’re heading down to DC today to present our Hacking the Gender Gap activity with HacDC. We’ll be giving a short presentation and then collecting more stories of people’s experiences with technology – the good and the bad – to see what we can learn from the group about where the gender gap arises. Read about our gender gap at the Women in Tech Summit or at AdaCamp and HOPE9. If you know anyone in DC, the event will start at 2 pm, you can read the details here. Thanks again to Katie at HacDC for inviting us!
